Talent can come in many different shapes and sizes. I went through nine years of dance and two years of cheer and to be frank, I was probably the worst on the team… seriously! Looking back at old videos I’m not too sure why I stayed in for so long. I later tried singing and quickly realized I would never be the next American Idol. I walked through life believing that maybe I just wasn’t given any talents. It wasn’t too upsetting, but it would kind of irk me when I would see people doing incredible things on TV… why couldn’t I do those things?
When I was a little girl, I was always taking photos. Of lizards. Of flowers. Of weird designs on benches. Of my toes in the sand on the beach. Basically of anything that caught my interest. Were the pictures National Geographic worthy? Definitely not. However, if I do say so myself, they were slightly above the creativity average of a child. I loved being able to play with different lighting, angles, and subjects. I have (thankfully) always been surrounded by honest people who have always told it like it is. They made it very clear that I was not born to dance in the Nutcracker or win The Voice, but they were always impressed by my photos.
In May of 2018 I made an incredibly impulsive decision to purchase a new DSLR camera. This was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made. I began spending nearly all of my free time driving around and taking thousands of portraits to post on Instagram. This was when I finally realized that maybe I did have a talent… Photography. Some people may read this and think, “Photography? A talent? All you do is press a button…” but photography is so much more than that. I won’t bore you with technical terms, but successful and beautiful photography requires the ability work angles, pose models, edit shots, etc. There is so much more work that goes into a single photo than people realize. Please note that none of this is to be said with any form of negativity. Nothing brings me more joy than working in photography. I love shooting, editing, and watching the photos completely transform into true forms of art that my clients love.
